From Medical Staff
“It has been such a joy to collaborate with Charity to care for laboring families—as a CNM provider, I love that I can trust that the patient is receiving evidence-based labor support if my responsibilities pull me away from our shared patient/client. Charity is kind, compassionate, smart, and innovative. She is an integral part of the birth team—working with clear communication, respect, and advocacy.”
~Cara Busenhart, PhD, APRN, CNM, FACNM Program Director, Nurse-Midwifery University of Kansas School of Nursing
“Charity is rare - her style is so very personal and real. She's easy to work with and obviously genuinely loves her job. She beautifully balances empathy and trust with my patients but also respects and supports evidence-based care. I love when I get to work with her - as I see her as an active member of our birth team and a tool to help my patients feel further heard, safe, supported, and protected. She also offers more than just delivery doula services - her pregnancy support, education, postpartum support, and photography make her a complete package. She will always be welcome and I cannot recommend her enough!”
~ Rebecca Hamel, M.D. OBGYN
“Charity does an incredible service for persons seeking a connected and honest birth experience. She once told me that she specializes in hospital births because sometimes those parents need her the most, and as an OBGYN, partnering with her does make for a better experience across the board. I thank her for all of the kindness and compassion she has shared with my patients and I highly recommend her doula services.”
~Meredith Gray M.D.
"Charity was a dream. She worked to support first-time parents who were very anxious about a medically indicated induction and supported her through necessary interventions. She put my patient and her partner at ease and they were very happy with their birth. This obstetrician was also happy to have her support through what could have otherwise been a difficult labor and delivery. I will recommend her highly to future patients requesting doula services."
~ Dr. McNulty, OBGYN
“When I have done a great job in a birth, a lot of thanks has to go to you as the doula. I truly learn so much from you about how to be a good labor support person. My patients are getting great support from their team, and that's the most important thing. I look forward to working with you again soon!”
~Laura, RN, L&D Nurse
“We recently hired Charity for the birth of our 5th child. I can't believe we waited this long to use a doula. She was absolutely amazing! As a labor and delivery nurse, myself, I had incredibly high expectations and she exceeded them all! She was such phenomenal support to me and my husband. She helped advocate for me and my birth wishes, and she supported me when I wanted to give up. I am so excited to see the birth photos she took and will treasure those memories forever. Thank you, Charity for providing such an exceptional pregnancy and birth experience!”

From Our Birth Clients
“I knew when we had our first conversation that Charity was the kind of person I would feel so comfortable with. Through labor she made me feel extremely supported. I felt safe in her care and when she stayed on the phone with us during her drive over while I was in labor, my mind was blown by the level of compassion she showed us. Thanks to Charity, I was able to calm down and begin to focus again after letting myself go to the fear. These words I know don't come close to how happy we are with Charity’s doula support and are so thankful that despite her busy schedule, she was always available to us. We know Charity will be the first person we go to when we decide on having baby #2!”

“Words cannot express how grateful my husband and I are that we found Charity and she was there for the birth of our daughter. Charity’s knowledge about pregnancy and childbirth is invaluable. She has such a warm personality and brings with her an immediate sense of calm. I truly believe that Charity’s multiple pushing techniques prevented me from having to have a c-section. I was fearful when I decided I would like to have a doula present for my daughter’s birth. I had imagined that the hospital staff would not be open to my choice to have a doula & that it would be an “us vs them” situation. I quickly learned that I was wrong. Charity is so experienced with hospital births and actually knew some of the staff at the hospital. They were all very accepting of my choice to have a doula and there was mutual respect between the hospital staff and Charity. My husband started our journey not knowing what a doula was and now cannot imagine having our second child without Charity present.”

“Charity is a supportive, gentle, and calming birth advocate and exactly the person I needed by my side for my unmedicated home birth which led to a post-partum maternal hospital transfer. I was impressed by Charity's knowledge and skills while preparing for the birth, but where she truly shined was knowing exactly how to respond in each moment of labor and delivery to help me feel more physically and mentally comfortable while trusting me and baby to do our thing. When after the birth things didn't go as planned, Charity was a strong and calm advocate who helped the process go smoothly and comfortably. On top of her amazing support, Charity also captured priceless images of my daughter being born. I am in deep gratitude for Charity's skill, talent, and Aloha spirit.”

"Charity's professional birth support during my labor and delivery was absolutely EVERYTHING I needed. She was amazing at noticing where my tension was during contractions, she knew exactly what to say and where to calmly touch to remind me to relax. Her compassion and reassurance kept me in my zone. My husband is beyond thankful for her guidance, and cannot stop bragging to everyone about her and how much she helped him, to help me, through each contraction. She made sure he was always involved and taken care of as well. Charity gave me all of her energy. She is extremely knowledgeable and very passionate about being everything you and your spouse need during your labor and delivery. Charity will go above and beyond to make sure she exceeds your expectations! If you are wanting to have the best support during your labor and delivery Charity is who you need on your team on one of the best days of your life! She made my dream birth come true and helped me deliver my 9lb 5oz baby boy without any pain medication. I cannot say enough good things about her support!"

“Working with Charity was one of the best decisions I made around my pregnancy and birth. We wanted someone compassionate, culturally sensitive/aware, knowledgeable, and reliable; Charity was all of those things and more! She made me feel calm, empowered, and safe from the moment we met; and that feeling magnified throughout my pregnancy, labor and delivery. She provided me with useful tools and resources to learn about relaxation during labor, and they were so helpful! Charity is organized, passionate, empathetic, and personable which made her the perfect fit for me! She has a balanced approach to labor and delivery and kept an open mind about my wishes. Without a doubt, I'd say anyone would be lucky to have her as their birth doula!”

“Having Charity as a doula for our second baby was such a healing experience and gave me the birth experience I dreamed of. Charity held the space for my husband and me to be fully present in the moment by communicating with our Midwife, taking gentle and calm control when required with a simple change of position, a sip of water, and an empowering word of encouragement. Charity protected me from stress during labor and birth which gave me the confidence and strength to focus on my body’s cues and our baby. We will remember Charity as the single most important person of our birth team with her incredible wealth of knowledge, professionalism, laughter, and lightheartedness, having her with us was like the ultimate Motherly experience”

“Angel at your bedside! Charity was there for me and my husband at a life-altering moment and I will always remember this amazing gift and this remarkable woman. Her peaceful, reassuring presence matched by intuitive, balanced respect for my husband as “head coach” exceeded all expectations I had of doulas. Our birth story, besides having accomplished a “natural” unmedicated childbirth (despite having to have an emergency induction) will always happily include Charity- A wonderful doula!”
Forever Grateful

“My husband and I are very pleased with Charity's work. This is the doula you want for the best birth experience. Charity had her work cut out for her with my son's birth! Charity was there for my 2am calls, for the day spent in the hospital, and came over to plan ways to support my husband and I as we labored in a hospital on "lockdown". I was grateful for my birth experience largely because of her support. She takes her profession seriously and her personality is one of unending patience and passion for what she does. Her resilience and quick thinking are top-notch. She is a very grounding and empowering presence - even via telephone! Even now as my husband and I try to navigate our new roles as parents with a days-old newborn while on quarantine, she's checking in with us and supporting us. I'm incredibly grateful and cannot recommend her enough.”

A Partner’s Perspective
”I will start by saying, as a husband, I was skeptical about hiring a doula. I was concerned that I would be partially removed from the "support role" and that a doula would be a distraction that would result in lost intimacy. We interviewed a number of doulas here in Kansas City and I came out of each meeting with the same skepticism...with all but our meeting with Mahina! Whereas all of the other doulas seemed like part-time, hippy-dippy hobbyists who were indirect and uneducated, Charity was the polar opposite. She was kind and compassionate but also direct, well-educated, and well-spoken. Charity took time to understand our desires and was extremely warm and comforting throughout the entire birthing process. She was worth every penny and more! She consistently and lovingly advocated for us in the hospital and created more of a "boutique" and personalized experience for us. She helped my wife achieve maximum comfort during the hospital visit and promptly answered her phone at 3:30AM to help us determine the timing of going to the hospital. Sure enough, she was there when we were admitted at 5:00AM and although she was operating on little sleep because of a client's birth the previous day, you would never know.
It also gave me great comfort that Charity is the doula for many of the respected doctors, OBGYNs, and surgeons in Kansas City. There is a lot that we didn't know - but I knew that if those people trusted her, we could too.
Her professionalism, empathy, and attentiveness were unmatched and we will definitely hire her for baby #2 when the time comes.”

"As a dad, I was hesitant to hire a doula because I did not see why we needed one. My wife kept insisting, so I agreed, but I did not want to be replaced. I am so grateful that we hired Charity! I think our birth would have been fine alone, but Charity totally elevated our experience. With her help, we were able to achieve our dream birth. She helped me know exactly what to do to support my wife at the perfect moment. I am forever grateful for her reassurance and guidance!"

"As our birth was nearing I was beginning to get nervous about providing the proper support and care for my wife during the delivery process, in addition to what to expect when we brought our baby girl home. Therefore I began my search for a doula the week before our due date. With her calm demeanor and with Charity also providing photography we knew it was a perfect fit. Thankfully we hired her when we did as my wife began labor 3 days later. She had a very long labor but she was there for us every step of the way. Her assistance during labor was so beneficial and looking back at the pictures, I could not have imagined it without her. She did a great job assisting and comforting my wife all while keeping me fully involved and answering all my questions. Our delivery doctor and nurses even commented on the quality support she provided and hoped to get to work with her again!
I cannot thank Charity enough for all of her help. It would have been a much more difficult process without her support (and her snacks). Hiring her was a great investment."
~ Bret W.
“I highly recommend Charity based on her experience, knowledge, and professionalism. From our initial meeting, Charity was open and honest. She understands and presents evidence-based information to support the birthing process, which as a physician, I appreciate. We chose Charity after an extensive search for a doula. She was highly recommended by at least half a dozen people in our immediate circle. To be honest, I would have paid more for her services knowing what I know now! She far surpassed our expectations. The day of the delivery she was prompt, which was impressive as she had just been at a birth with another client the day/night before (she must have been exhausted but I never heard her complain or express it once). Charity absolutely knocked it out of the park! I hate when people assume that men can not handle birth. I was not nervous or lost in the process of birth, but Charity has it down to a science. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without her. From creature comforts to the timing of movements, to signs of progress, there are so many things that could easily be overlooked. If you want a birthing experience you will remember for the rest of your life as pleasurable, warm, and comforting, please do yourselves a favor and ask Charity to be a part of it.”
